We will start this excursion to the Penyagolosa Peak, from the surroundings of the "Mas de la Costa", old rural school from the Spanish Republic period, ceded in 1994 to the Hiking Centre of Valencia (950m above sea level). This route runs along the PR CV 79 along the natural park of Penyagolosa, along a quite stony path and with great biodiversity originated by the different calcareous and siliceous substrates.

The vegetation that develops in the natural park of Penyagolosa varies depending on the altitude. At the lower elevations the Black Pine grows, at the sunny areas the Rodeno Pine is found and in the shady and highlands the Albar Pine predominates.

Among the fauna associated with this rich forest ecosystem, the ornithofauna of great diurnal and nocturnal raptors such as the Golden Eagle and the Perdicera Eagle, and the presence of the Cabra Montesa, Gato Montés, Jineta and Tejón stand out.

Following the path through these places and after passing some abandoned farmhouses, we will stop to gather strength in an old fountain that served to give water to the cattle. Continuing along the same path we will arrive at a large esplanade from where we can see the Penyagolosa's peak from the south face, its most torn and vertical slope. After walking for 2 km along this path we will ascend through a gorge surrounding the peak to face it on its north side. In its last 300 meters before reaching the peak, we can see how the vegetation changes considerably, giving rise to a high mountain flora and where it is very easy to see Cabras Montesas among the large steep stones. Upon reaching the peak, we will regain our strength enjoying the 360º views that this summit offers, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sierra de Javalambre. We will be able to take a picture before starting our way back.

After the effort made, we will take a dip in a secret place belonging to the river Lucena. Our stay in the region of Alcalatén will finish by having an incredible meal of typical local food that you will remember over the years.
