Morella, was very important city of the Middle Ages, since in this period only the cities of València and Xàtiva were important. Its prosperity was based on the trade of wool and wheat, which gave a great economic and cultural splendor, the proof is its spectacular buildings of Gothic style. Besides, it is worth mentioning its special geographical situation, dominating the routes of communication between Aragón and the Mediterranean, which made it a place of great military importance disputed by numerous armies throughout history.
We will begin at the outskirts of the city, contemplating the excellent Gothic aqueducts of Santa Lucía and La Pedrera, then we will head towards the Saint Michael towers of the 14th and 15th centuries, the main entrance to the city. Once inside the historic centre, we will take the main street, passing through the Gothic style town hall with Renaissance additions, arriving at Blasco de Aragón street with its characteristic arcades, where the old market used to be. We will continue towards Plaza del Estudio, where we will observe the old half-timbered houses and next to it, the Portal del Rey. From this point we will start the ascent to the Plaza Arciprestral, where the Basílica of Santa María with its characteristic museum, is one of the treasures of Valencian Gothic.
Following the Calle del Hospital, we will access through the main gate to the Castle of Morella where we can visit the Convent of San Francisco with its characteristic chapter house that houses a curiosity of the time, a dance of death, a very characteristic painting that allows us to make an idea of the culture and traditions people of the Late Middle Ages had. We will then enter the castle which, built on the top of the population on a grinding wheel, is a fortification of Islamic origins, with later reforms of medieval architecture. The castle is divided into three levels; A first level at the bottom of the rock where the entrance and the remains of a guard body are, a second level in which the artillery batteries and the Governor's Palace were located and finally, a third level where the Plaza de Armas is located.
Once we have seen this set, we will start our way back to the starting point crossing other emblematic areas of the town such as the Judería, Ciurana House, Porta de Sant Mateu or the different lookout towers that surround the city.
